What If You Were The Child You Sponsor?

It's the last week of Compassion Blog Month and the prompt this time is to write as if I were the sponsored child, to write a letter to my sponsor, or write about where I live, what living in extreme poverty is like, or what it  might be like to switch places with my sponsored child.

I'll add a little update at the end of this post to let you know where we stand with the September sponsorship goal, and how you can help :)

What would it be like to wake up one day and realize you've switched places with your sponsored child? For me to go to sleep in a comfortable bed, in a home with too many rooms, too many things, and wake up in Mexico, where our little Mizriam lives? What would I say if I were a child living in extreme poverty?

Dear Sponsor -

I am so thankful for you, and we praise God for you every day. I am so happy to be able to go to school, to have shoes to wear on the long walk, and to know that I don't have to go find a job until I'm older. I can play with the other kids at school instead of being left on my own while my parents work. Sometimes, I don't even see my family if they have to go away for a job. I know I'll have something to eat today when I go to school.

Your letters, photos, and prayers give me hope. Thank you for letting me know that you care about me, that someone loves me. Thank you for the opportunity to learn about Jesus at school and for sharing your favorite Bible verses with me. One day I think I would like to be a teacher and help other children learn about the God who loves them so much. I also really like writing and would like to write letters to other kids who need someone to pray for them.

I pray for you every day and can't wait to receive your next letter in the mail. I tell all my friends about you, and what your family is like. I hope I can meet you one day.

Thank you for giving me hope.

Whew. Ok. I thought that was going to be a little easier than it was. In all honesty I'm sitting here with tears on my face, wanting to fly to Mexico and hug our sweet boy, beyond thankful for God's goodness in our lives that we can help Mizriam have hope that he doesn't have to stay in poverty.

Be the hope for a child in poverty. Help us reach the goal of sponsoring one of the 1,102 children we need to reach our goal this month. It's easy. It's affordable.
